“Personally I just want to see Mace Windus face when I walk into the temple with one. That or a nexu kit. He doesn’t know about the tookas the crèche are looking after yet, at least I don’t think so.”
She hears Hound snort beneath his helmet, giving him a bright grin.
“You know you want to see it too.”
Hound shakes his head, wearing a huge grin beneath his bucket as he looks at the redhead.
“Not sure i know what you mean. General Windu is a man of a serious nature.”
Fives imagined Mace Windu’s face twisting and couldn’t help laughing. It would be really interesting to see. A stoic Jedi can’t help but react calmly to this.
“I’d give anything to see this! And it would be cool to have a naked photo of it to prove it!! I guess even Skywalker didn’t piss him off that much.”
Maybe he should catch something like that from animals for Aelith next time. Rex wouldn’t approve, but Skywalker would.
“Let me guess vod, you’re thinking about asking Skywalker to catch one of those things, right? It’s written all over your face”
Hound laughed.
“Don’t let him fool you. I’m friends with his former padawan master Billaba. That man is not serious at all.”
She grins giving Grizzer a final pat before standing, turning to grin at Fives.
“You don’t need to, I know where there’s an illegal dealer in wildlife. I keep my eyes on the reports coming from the guard, they have a nexu kit that needs medical care and fox let it slip where they are and when the guard are going in.”
“Meh Anakin doesn’t frighten me like he does some of the others. Power isn’t everything, you have to know how to use it properly, not run round like… I’m trying to think of a way to put it in this galaxies terms. My world or part of it would use a kagouti in a pottery shop, big animal, lots of delicate things and shelves in the way. Anakin has power, he just lacks finesse. It’s why Obi wan always beats him at sparring.” She looks up from her work, checking the colour of the skin around the port, pleased to see it looking healthy. “I try to keep it calm. I want people to come to me for help, of course it helps I can just hold them in place with the force if they try to run unlike kix. Only had to do it with Rex so far. He’s slipperier than an eel when it comes to checkups post battle, and as stubborn as a bull guar.”
“Well, you know better. I don’t know much about the Force, so I can’t say for sure. But he’s a great general and I’m grateful to him for coming after me.”
No matter how inelegant Skywalker was in using the Force. He was good at what he did and that was the main thing. He always helped his men whenever he could. His own case was special, but Skywalker saved him and Echo was grateful.
Echo chuckled.
“I imagine. Rex is too responsible and is afraid that if he lies in bed longer than necessary, he will not be able to help someone. But he also needs rest and treatment. Thank you very much, by the way. Feels much better.”
She nods at his words, using a light healing spell to boost the nerve growth into the ports, fingers making sure to massage the magika into the skin lightly.
“He’s a good man if a little intense, needs a walloping every so often to keep him from getting cocky.” Aelith chuckles at that, helping echo sit upright. “He reminds me of my big brother, he can fight those he sees as family, but divines help you if you hurt them. It’s like a hurricane tearing everything apart.”
An inelegant snort slips from her lips as he speaks of Rex, giving him the signal to try and stand on his new legs.
“Rex can’t do it all, next time I’m getting Hardcase to sit on him. Know I know why Kix threatens to sedate him. Now come on. Let’s try those new legs out. Hold onto me while the neural ports calibrate.”
“Yeah he is. According to master Yoda he’ll be a child for at least 150 years, his species ages slower than the altmer from my world. My mother is in her 50’s and looks the same age I do. She has more altmer blood than I do to be fair though.”
“I’ve been asked to put a team together as well for the expedition down. Obi wan has volunteered along with Cody, but I want you there, you, Tup and Hardcase. I get on with those two best besides you and I know for a fact they listen to me, I’m excited to see what we find, I know containment spells so we can bring stuff up if we have to, and I have experience dealing with some of my worlds darkest entities like molag bal and necromancers.”
His words deepen the flush to her cheeks, hiding her face against his armor for a moment.
“I’m just me Fives. A simple mage from Highrock who touched the wrong crystal and dumped herself in your lap, literally. Not a single regret though. Look who I landed on.”
She lifts her head before going on tip toe to plant a soft kiss on his lips, able to take the risk in the quiet of her quarters.
It will grow for 150 years… It’s too long. So much can happen in 150 years. The galaxy can change very much during this time. But for the Jedi, it probably won’t matter. Attachments are prohibited.
“It’s a bit sad to wait 150 years before you grow up.”
Fives nodded. If they’re going to explore the Sith catacombs, they need the best people. Tup and Hardcase is a great option. They can handle anything if they get a hold of themselves.
“Great option. The guys can handle it. Tup wanted an interesting mission, he’ll get it. And I’m always at your service.”
He hugged her gently, enjoying her kiss.
“If not for you, my life would be different. Less bright”
“He Will. He won’t be like a baby all that time though. That’s up to adulthood, so there’s the teenage years as well.”
She gives a contented sigh against his breast plate, wishing for once she was just a little taller, sure it came in handy when thin delving being small, but now around the clones it was infuriating. Hardcase kept using her as an arm rest in briefings.
“Tup is a what do you call it?”
She pauses for a moment trying to think of the word.
“A geek, he’s a geek. He wants to visit nirn to see the ruins there and see a draugr. I have no idea what he thinks they are, they’re creepy. That’s what they are.”
I am absolutely running away with baby Rex and spoiling him and his brothers rotten. Come here little guy you don’t need to worry about money. I gotchu.
AU where the clones and the droids unionize and collectively go on strike and stand threateningly around important government buildings until they get their rights
palpatine, skulking in his office: Why aren’t they shooting each other!?!?!
B-1 Battle Droid: HALT! who goes there?
Cody: oh shit droids
Rex: oh no
Droid: Clones! I must report this intrusion to Count Dooku!
Cody: NO SHIT WAIT
Rex: we’re…. uhhhh
Rex: we’re from the union
Droid: …
Droid: the union?
Rex: yeah, we represent the rights and interests of working soldiers throughout the galaxy.
Cody, catching on: so, buddy, are you happy with your current working conditions?
Droid: well, we, uh,,
Rex: does your employer treat you well?
Droid: *muttering* my software hasn’t been updated in two years
Rex, to Cody: *gasp* they don’t even get regular software updates
Rex didn’t ever think he’d feel… pity, for a battle droid, but he feels it now, because the droids are standing in front of him, confused (that’s the only normal thing about this whole situation), but strangely… hopeful.
“The… u-u-union?” the first droid repeats, tilting it’s head. The stutter sounds like some sort of voice-modulator glitch, especially if it’s true that the software hasn’t been updated for so long.
“Yeah, the union,” Cody drawls slowly, putting a hand on Rex’s shoulder. Rex can feel his brother’s mind working, calculating. “We’re in the same boat, clones and droids. We’re mistreated, unpaid, and fed up with it. Would you like to change that?”
If they’d been clones, they would have hesitated. Asked for more details. Thought it through, considered every option for a couple days. But they’re droids, and their processors whip through all of that faster than Rex can blink.
“W-what will it cost?” the first droid asks. Rex grins.
“Your processors, your help. We’ll have to team up. That means, no more Republic-seperatist shootouts.”
The droid stares at him for a moment, and then nods jerkily. Rex takes a step forward and offers it his hand. He isn’t expecting the droid to flinch backwards, hinges hissing in alarm, and then realizes with a start that the droid probably doesn’t even know what a handshake is.
“Here, wait,” he says placatingly, and reaches for it slowly, feeling another surge of that strange combination of pity and understanding. He uses his free hand to guide the droid’s metal fingers into his opposite palm.
“This is what sentient beings do when they greet people,” Rex explains gently, “or when they’re making an agreement. It’s a sign of friendliness, or trust.”
He shakes the loose limb and feels the droid’s grip tighten–too much, half comprehending, so Rex quickly extracts his hand before the droid can do any damage in the misunderstanding.
“Right, then,” Cody says with a grin. “Let’s get to work. What are you called, droid?”
It looks at them, glances back to it’s fellows behind them, silently watching. Waiting for it, the designated leader, to make a decision.
“RB-627.”
The answer makes Rex’s lip curl. It’s not exactly the same, because this is, after all, a droid, but it’s all too familiar at the same time.
“No, not that,” he responds. “That’s a number. We’re looking for a name.”
The droid whirrs. It sounds like it’s processor is struggling to keep up.
“Nn-nnname,” it repeats, glitching out again. “I have not–never–”
“Okay, it’s okay,” Cody reassures it. “We’ll call you Glitch, then. Until you can think of something better.”
The droid–Glitch–nods in acceptance, and Rex scowls because that easy acceptance and obedience isn’t desirable in anything sentient, not even droids, but there will be time to teach them how to think later.
“Let’s go,” he says and turns on his heel, still half-expecting to get shot in the back. He grins and shares a triumphant glance with Cody when he hears the clatter of a platoon of battle droids following them.
That sound has never before brought him so much hope, and this is just the beginning.
